Not your average pet shop

EE Choon Hiok left her job as an accounts clerk two years ago to start a pet shop.

The first two months were a nightmare as she was afraid to touch or hold the animals such as hamsters and Peking ducks. It was even worse if they were reptiles such as tortoises and iguanas.

But today, if one were to visit her shop, Chai Long Aquarim and Pets Shop, located at Giant in Plentong, one will be surprised to see how skillfully she cuddles those furry creatures and holds the reptiles.

And her secret: "I learnt all these skills from my suppliers and customers."

Unlike other pet shops, Choon Hiok's outlet sells more than just cats, dogs and fish.

A miniature version of a kangaroo called mini kangaroo is among the interesting creatures found in the shop. Feeding on food consumed by rabbits and hamsters, this hopping creature has huge eyes, thin and long lower limbs, but without a pouch.

CUTE: Ee showing two unique species of turtles — a side-neck turtle (left) and an alligator-snapping turtle on sale at her shop.

LOVABLE: If you want to hear me shriek, just provoke me.

This native animal of New Zealand also has short upper limbs. Sugar glider, as the name implies, loves sweet fruits. Resembling a smaller version of a flying fox, this shy little creature, which originates from South Africa, likes to hide in a colony inside boxes or bottles. It is tame but once provoked, it will emit a shrieking sound.

There are several species of turtles sold at the shop. Among the unique ones are the side-neck turtle and alligator snapping turtle. The former has a relatively long neck while the latter's shell look like the skin of an alligator.

Fish and pet food, decorative items, together with pet toiletries, are also on sale.

Chai Long is open from 9.30am to 10.30pm daily.
