JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP): Indonesian authorities in Bali have culled more than 5,400 chickens in an effort to prevent the spread of the H5N1 virus that claimed one life on the resort island last week, a local official said Saturday. A 29-year-old woman died last Sunday after coming in contact with infected chickens. Authorities started culling chickens Monday in the woman's village of Banyar Dangin Tukar Aya in Jembrana district, said I Gusti Sanjaya, head of the local agricultural, forestry and fishery office. Sanjaya said nearly 5,300 chickens were slaughtered as of Friday and another 100 were killed Saturday. All of the bird's were within a one-kilometer-radius of the village. |
Authorities also stopped the transportation of poultry into or out of Jembrana district, Sanjaya said. Officials are still trying to determine if the woman's 5-year-old daughter, who died Aug. 3 and was later cremated, may have also had the virus. According to the World Health Organization, at least 192 people _ 83 of them in Indonesia _ have died worldwide from bird flu since it first infected Asian ducks and chickens in 2003. The virus remains hard for people to catch, but experts fear it will mutate into a form that spreads easily among humans, potentially sparking a pandemic. So far, most human cases have been linked to contact with infected birds. |
