-- The Singapore government intends to make Tangerang city, just outside
Jakarta's western outskirts, a pilot project for bird flu control, a local
husbandry official said.
"If the bird flu control project in Tangerang is successful, it will serve as a
yardstick for other areas in Indonesia to control the spread of the H5NI virus,"
Charun Sopandi, head of the husbandry division at Tangerang's municipal
agriculture and husbandry office, said here Tuesday. |
The city was chosen as
the location of the pilot project due to its seriousness in handling the
spread of the H5NI virus and the relatively high number of bird flu cases
that had happened there, Indonesia's Antara news agency quoted him as
saying.
To carry out the project, the Singapore government had drawn up a bird flu
control system under which two volunteers would be stationed at each village
to get first-hand information on suspected bird flu sufferers, he said.

The volunteers would later
inform the city administration and the central government of suspected bird flu
sufferers for quick treatment, he said.
He said the neighboring country had also provided the city administration with
208 motorcycles, 13 disinfectant sprayers and two computers equipped with
special programs to record bird flu cases, he said. The sprayers would be
distributed among 13 sub districts in the municipality while each village would
receive two motorcycles, he said.-- BERNAMA |
