National Zoo's 'present location suitable'

NST, 1 Dec 2004

THE National Zoo is not moving anywhere. The Government has decided that its present location in Hulu Klang is suitable.

Relocating the animals, said National Resources and Environment Ministry Parliamentary Secretary Sazmi Miah, would also be risky.

"Some of the animals may not survive the journey".

"And even if they do, they still have to get used to their new surroundings. All these would be too risky".

Sazmi said some animals, however, might be relocated to other areas within the present zoo's boundaries".

"We may move animals presently situated close to residential areas to holding areas deeper in the zoo".

On the change of management of the National Zoo, he said the ministry would consider any offer by its current administrators.

"But we haven't received anything official from the Zoological Society of Malaysia".

Under the Eighth Malaysia Plan, the National Zoo received an annual grant of RM8 million.

Sazmi said the RM500,000 collected from ticket sales were insufficient to cover costs.

In reply to Mohd Razali Che Mamat (BN-Kuala Kerai) earlier, he said there were 25 zoos and zoological parks in Malaysia.
