PENANG should explore pet-related industries which have good potential, said Pulau Be-tong assemblyman Muhamad Farid Saad. “We can explore sectors such as producing pet food since most of the pet accessories and food are now imported from overseas,” he told reporters after opening the ‘Love Your Cat’ show at Pesta Pulau Pinang recently. He said many good breed cats were brought into Penang every year and there was potential in pet-related industries like veterinary services and producing pet toys and grooming products. “The Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) should co-operate with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to do studies on the possibility of producing cat food,” he said. Muhamad Farid said almost every family, especially the Malays, had a cat at home and there was a big market to tap into. |
He said with such ventures, the state could cut down significantly on imports of pet-related products. On the cat show, he said it had helped deliver the right message to the cat owners. “The show was to remind the owners about their heavy responsibilities to take care of their pets,” he said. |
