Council president Adnan Md Ikhsan announced at the MPSJ full board meeting on Thursday that it was working hand-in-hand with non-governmental organisation Independent Pet Rescuers (IPR) on the operation.

“Our collaboration just started recently,” said Adnan. “The IPR actually approached us and we thought it would be good to work together to ensure our streets are safe from wild dogs,” he said, adding that children had fallen victim to the dogs.

He added that sometimes the dogs posed problems to people, and blasted irresponsible owners who let their dogs stray.

He cited the example of owners of Rottweilers who let their dogs roam freely during the mating season.

“I think it's important that owners be responsible for their pets.

“We are placing dogs that are caught in a pound next to Taman Perindustrian Puchong Utama 2, and anyone who wishes to adopt them may do so. Pet Rescuers is also helping us to place the seized dogs in estates and orchards which need a lot of these dogs,” said Adnan.

The operation, he said, was carried out jointly with the help of three private companies.

“We are imposing a compound of RM1,000 on owners who come to claim their dogs. The public can adopt them at RM50 (for adults) but no fee is charged for puppies.”  A total of 14 compounds have so far been issued to owners who were cited as irresponsible.

Adnan said the council had received 657 complaints on stray dogs this year.

Meanwhile, the IPR, has taken about 60 dogs (adults and puppies) for placement in farms. “We are working continuously with the IPR to find new homes and owners for the dogs. Some will have to be euthanized if no one comes to claim or adopt them,” he said.

For adoption enquiries, call Sherrina K of IPR at 012-202 6384 or Hanafi of the MPSJ, who is in charge of the pound, at 017-207 6684.
