DUBAI, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- The Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry Wednesday assured consumers poultry from outside Kuala Lumpur and Selangor is safe to eat.

Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said chickens from places other than the affected areas in Gombak and Setapak were safe for human consumption.

"They are not affected by the bird-flu outbreak in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor because of the distance of their locations," he said.

Muhyiddin said preventive measures to contain the outbreak were in full swing to ensure the deadly H5N1 virus did not spread to other areas.

"The committee in charge met yesterday chaired by my deputy secretary-general. I've been informed of the measures taken since Monday.

"Culling of chickens have started and will continue," he told Malaysian journalists after visiting Mirak Fit Fresh LLC, a fresh products production and distribution centre in Sharjah, near here, Tuesday.

Muhyiddin was asked to comment on the bird flu outbreak in Gombak and Genting Klang in Setapak.

Muhyiddin said his ministry was abiding by the guidelines stipulated in the emergency response plan to deal with the outbreak.

"We've the experience, having dealt with an earlier outbreak in Tumpat, Kelantan," he said.

On Singapore suspending poultry imports from the Klang Valley, he said it was the country's right to do so but the suspension was only for poultry from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

Chicken imports from Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan are not affected, he said.

"Previously, Singapore faced the same problem, but they realized if they don't import from Malaysia, the price of chicken meat sold in the republic, brought in from other sources, was costly," he said.

He said the situation in poultry farms in Johor and Melaka was under control and chickens from the two states were safe to eat.-- BERNAMA
