THE cute yapping puppies on display at the Seberang Prai Municipal Council's spaying programme drew everyone's attention.

The programme at Chai Leng Park market in Butterworth was jointly organized by the council and SPCA Seberang Prai and aimed to cut down the number of stray dogs and cats by educating the public to be responsible owners.

Councillor Beh Kim Hee said: “People are always complaining about stray dogs rummaging through the rubbish, barking at night, attacking people and defecating in their compound. The council receives more than 20 complaints about strays every month.”

SPCA Seberang Prai chairman Dr. Roland Lim said it was important that pet owners spay their pets to prevent overpopulation.

“Please do not throw the offspring away. That is very cruel and the puppies will starve or get knocked down by vehicles,” he said.

During the programme, the public was also encouraged to adopt the animals from SPCA’s stable.

The stop at the Chai Leng Park market is the first of four stops to be made every first and third Sunday of the month. The three other locations are Tasek Mutiara, Tambun Indah and Taman Sri Rambai.

Dr Lim said the cost of spaying was subsidized by the council.  “The actual cost is around RM200 to RM300. But under this programme, it only costs RM120.

“Pet owners can register at any of the four locations and bring along their pets. But make sure that your pet is clean, free from fleas and it must abstain from food 16 hours before the procedure,” he explained.  He said 23 people had registered to have their dogs spayed.

Dr Lim added vets could volunteer for the programme. For further details, call him at 012-466 3737.
