A furry bundle of joy

AMONG the many mongrels that are subjected to pain and suffering, one puppy has managed to find the love that she rightfully deserves.

Named Popee-Co by its 18-year-old owner, Low Yoke Wan, the mongrel, which turned one on Dec 31, is the apple of the teenager’s eye.

“Popee-Co is the best dog that I’ve ever had and I love her very much,” said Low, who celebrated her canine companion’s birthday recently.

The college student even baked Popee-Co a birthday “cake” made of minced chicken and cheese.

“I wanted to do something for her birthday as she brings me a lot of joy, and since Popee-Co loves eating, I made her something which I knew she would relish,” said Low.

Popee-Co and Low found each other after the puppy’s mother, a stray, was found loitering around her uncle’s house in Klang in Dec 2006.

“Seeing that the dog was pregnant, my uncle took her in and gave her food. A few weeks later, she gave birth to a litter of three puppies,” said Low.

The dog has since been adopted by Low’s uncle, who is a die-hard dog lover. Now named Lily, she has also been spayed.

Best of friends: Low with Emma on her right and Popee-Co on her left. Seated on the floor is Lily.

Low’s uncle managed to find homes for two of the puppies but no one wanted Popee-Co because she was black, said Low.

“My uncle asked me if I wanted her and I agreed immediately as I found Popee-Co very endearing,’’ added Low.

Dog and owner are inseparable and even sleep together on the same bed every night.

Besides Lily, Low’s uncle has also adopted Emma, which was rescued by the Independent Pet Rescuers in Shah Alam in 2006.

“Emma was being moved from foster home to foster home as no one wanted to give her a permanent home. My uncle took her in because he felt that she deserved to have love and stability in her life,” said Low.

All the dogs get along fine whenever Low takes Popee-Co to her uncle's place to visit Lily and Emma.
