ANIMAL lovers can come forward and rescue abandoned dogs and cats, which are being put to sleep at an alarming rate.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) administrator Leng Lily said these animals were being put to sleep due to over-population and the lack of kennels at the SPCA premises in Penang.

Waiting for a loving home.

She said the lack of facilities left the SPCA with no choice but to put to sleep 51 of the 73 dogs and puppies, most of which were badly diseased when they were brought to them this year.

“Animal lovers can adopt these dogs which can be vaccinated after they are eight weeks old. Those who love animals, have time to spare and are not working can provide these animals with homes,” she said.

She added, the SPCA, which is a non-governmental organization, depended mostly on donations and help from volunteer workers.

Leng also said the society spent RM200,000 yearly and of this amount, RM3,000 was allocated by the Penang Municipal Council while the rest came from charity drives and public donation.

“The activities for the fundraising campaigns include selling of T-shirts and pet paraphernalia like dog leashes, caps etc,” she said.

She said the dogs were taken out for exercises two hours daily and that there was space constraint for them to roam and play.

Presently she said the society’s main office building, kitchen area and kennels for cats and dogs were sited on a 557.4 sq metre area.

The SPCA was looking for corporate companies, which could sponsor cash for the purchase of land to build additional kennels to house the abandoned animals, she said.

Samaritans with unused land can donate or lease it to SPCA while those interested in adopting a dog or cat can call Leng at 04-2816559.
