LABIS: A father and son have been warded for fever and influenza at Batu Gajah Hospital in Perak following checks in two villages where the H5N1 virus was found. Health Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek said they would undergo the necessary tests to determine whether they had contracted bird flu. “The father and son were among 298 people from 68 households in Batu Gajah which were checked by medical teams on Thursday. During the checks, the father and son were sent to the Batu Gajah Hospital for further tests,” he said after representing Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman in RTM’s Hore Hore programme yesterday. |
Dr Chua said at the moment there was no sign of anyone contracting bird flu and urged the public not to panic or listen to rumours. In Petaling Jaya, the ministry’s disease control director Dr Ramlee Rahmat said two patients had been isolated at Taiping hospital. He said the two, however, resided 10km from the Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, which was outside the 1km critical radius of the affected area. The resort and Kampung Changkat Tualang were two areas where the H5N1 virus was detected on Thursday. |
“We took them in anyway as a precautionary measure,” said Dr Ramlee when responding to a report that a 17-year-boy suspected of having bird flu had been admitted to the Ipoh Hospital’s isolation ward. In the report, Dr Ramlee was quoted as saying that the hospital would do a background check on the boy to see whom he had come in contact with. “The report is not true at all. All I said was that I would have to check whether it was true or not,” Dr Ramlee said. “I’ve checked twice with the hospital and there is no such case,” he added. |
