KUALA LUMPUR: Three people were admitted to hospital on Thursday with bird flu symptoms.

Health Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek said they were a 21-year-old man from Taiping, a 23-year-old man from Batu Gajah, and a three-year-old girl from Penang.

“They lived within 300m of the areas where avian flu virus was detected. They will be tested for bird flu. If the results are negative, they will be discharged,” he said after launching an international conference on robotic urologic surgery at the KL Hospital yesterday.

Health Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Lee Kah Choon said two seven-year-old children from Permatang Bogak were discharged from the Penang Hospital after they tested negative for bird flu.

“So far, some 900 people from Permatang Bogak, Permatang Sintok and Permatang Tok Loba have been screened. We have also checked 250 houses,” he said after inspecting the Kepala Batas Hospital’s facilities for suspected bird flu admissions.

Bird flu was detected in Permatang Bogak on Monday.

Fifteen local migratory birds were shot by the state Wildlife Department at Kuala Perlis, near Kangar, for the state Veterinary Department to take blood samples for testing.

The department's health unit chief Roslan Darus said no avian flu case had been detected in Perlis so far, and the authorities were taking precautionary measures to ensure the virus did not spread to Perlis.

He said the birds were shot on Thursday and among them were puchong cina, ruak-ruak, gembala kerbau and ayam-ayam

Blood samples from these birds would be sent to the Ipoh Veterinary Research Institute, he said.

“We should be able to get the results after a week,” he said.

Roslan urged the public to immediately inform the department if there were any unusual deaths of chickens or other types of birds.

The department can be contacted at 04-979 2600.
