JAKARTA: A one-year-old Indonesian girl died of the H5N1 strain of bird flu, a senior health official said yesterday. A swab and blood sample from the dead child have also been sent to a World Health Organization-sanctioned laboratory in Hong Kong for confirmation, said Hariadi Wibisono, a director at the Health Ministry. |
If confirmed, the girl’s death raises Indonesia’s death toll from H5N1 to 23, Hariadi said, adding that most of the positive bird flu virus results in Indonesia have then been confirmed by the WHO laboratory. --- AP.
