Tawau: The mystery behind the recent sudden deaths of 25 chickens at Kampung Gadi, 24km from here, went unanswered at the monthly meeting of the Tawau Municipal Council Monday due to the absence of representatives from the District Health Office and Department of Veterinary Services and Animal Industry (Dovsai). These representatives were among nine from the various government departments who failed to attend the meeting chaired by Deputy Council President Ismail Mayacob. According to councilor Haji Rackey Apna, the incident was reported to the Health Department and Dovsai but "no explanation was forthcoming". Ismail hoped heads of departments could attend every meeting so that they could immediately respond to issues raised by the councilors. He also wanted minutes and circulars |
to be issued earlier so that all those concerned would not fail to attend future meetings, especially the heads of departments. The council also endorsed the acquisition of 10 parking lots adjacent to the Municipal Council to accommodate the vehicles of councilors attending the monthly meetings. Most of the councilors supported the motion, but councilor Lim Heng Meng objected, saying it was not a fair move towards ordinary motorists. He said that the councilors should also feel the sentiments of the people in looking for parking spaces, rather than being given such privilege. The majority, however, believed that the temporary parking lots were necessary as it could enable the councilors to attend the meetings, instead of having to waste their time looking for parking spaces. |
After all, a meeting could not commence without their presence, they said. On another note, Ismail suggested that the Council's traffic committee discuss with the relevant authorities on the ban of public vehicles from the parking lots of Wisma Persekutuan. According to him, it was noted that ample parking spaces were available in the area, while some motorists complained that there were no signs to state they could not park their vehicles there. He said that building coordinators are aware that every building being constructed must be prepared to provide ample parking lots for the public.
