GOPENG, March 29 Mac (Bernama) -- The 80 residents in Kampung Redang Sawa and Changkat Tualang, near here, today received compensation amounting to RM15,116.80 for their chickens culled due to the avian flu.

The state Agriculture, Agro based Industry and Tourism committee chairman Datuk Mohamed Radzi Manan said they were paid based on the current market price.

The compensation for two commercial duck breeders will be paid through cheques soon, he told reporters after presenting the compensation at the villages, here Wednesday.

Also present was the State Veterinary Services Department Director Datuk Dr Abdul Kadir Osman.

Mohamed Radzi said a more systematic method in breeding chickens at the villages will begin the latest by June 1.

"We have to think how to collectively breed chickens including the provision of a bigger chicken coop and more systematic methods," he said.

The method not only promises better returns for the breeders but epidemics can easily be thwarted, he said.
