BUSAN, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia supports Canada's proposal for the creation of a fund to assist poor nations in facing the avian flu, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Friday.

"Assistance from the developed nations and those with the capacity is most welcome and Malaysia fully supports the proposal," he told Malaysian journalists when commenting on the outcome of the meeting of leaders of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) countries, here.

The Apec Business Advisory Council (Abac) meeting also discussed the issue over the avian flu which, if left unchecked, would threaten human lives and the economy, he said.

"There is an understanding that there has to be some kind of an action plan. We must make sure that this threat of avian flu is arrested. It is very important.

"There is a commitment that we should work together," Abdullah said.

He said there was a need for an exchange of information on avian influenza within Asean itself.

"Whatever information and counter-measures taken and proven effective, should be shared with all the countries.

"We can bring this up at the Asean summit in December. That's the time we should discuss the issue.

"And perhaps, we can have a formal plan, but at the moment, there is already cooperation among us on this," the Prime Minister said.

Abdullah also said his bilateral meetings with Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong, Mexican President Vicente Fox Quesada and Chilean President Ricardo Lagos Escobar touched on issues on enhancing trade relations between Malaysia and these countries.-- BERNAMA
