KUALA LUMPUR: Most cats are cute, but how many have the quality and pedigree of champions?

Eight international judges will have to choose the best out of 250 felines at the three-day Malaysia International Cat Show 2007 (MyCATS '07).

Cats from Malaysia and around the world are vying for the top prizes in four categories in the largest cat show in Asia.

The winners will be crowned at the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre off Jalan Duta today.

Wife of the Federal Territory Minister, Datin Seri Siti Nooriah Ana Abdul Razak, who opened the event, was a most suitable patron -- she once owned 21 cats.

"A passion for cats is a good way to promote responsibility and a sense of protectiveness, which is important especially among the younger generation," she said.

Some 2,000 visitors dropped by on the first day of the show and many were bowled over by the variety of breeds and standards represented.

Specialist cat breeder, Jimmy Lee, 52, said he was pleased at the number of visitors at the show.

“Events like MyCATS ’07 help to gather a large group of enthusiasts who are passionate about the quality of the breeds and showmanship. It is not just about winning”.

The event was organized by The Feline Society of Malaysia, Borneo Cat Club, The Cat Fanciers' Association of the United States and sponsored by Royal Canin.
