SEOUL: Officials have culled thousands of ducks in Gwangju after a low-virulent strain of the bird flu virus was confirmed in the south-western city, the Agriculture-Forestry Ministry said yesterday. “A low-pathogenic strain of H7 virus was detected at a duck farm in Gwangju where some 3,800 ducks were being raised”, the ministry said in a statement. “Although the virus was not of a virulent strain, the ministry decided to cull all the ducks there”, it said. |
A ministry official said the H7 virus posed no serious threat to the lives of infected birds and caused little harm to human health. Yonhap news agency said Gwangju officials had slaughtered and buried some 16,000 ducks at the farm. --- AFP.
