SARIKEI - At a recent meeting, Sarikei District Council (SDC) has decided to put a total ban on the rearing of poultry in residential areas in and around the town.

SDC chairman, Simon Chan Kam Wuai, who disclosed this to the press yesterday, said this measure was necessary to keep the town clean.

Public cooperation was definitely needed, he said, and warned that those who failed to comply with the regulation could be fined up to RM1,000.

Turning to dog owners, Chan advised them to keep their pets within the compound of their houses, adding that if they strayed, they could be captured and put to sleep if they were not claimed within a certain period.

"Captured dogs can be claimed by their owners after paying a nominal fee," he said, and explained that the need to get tough on dogs was in response to numerous public complaints about pedestrians having been bitten or chased by the fierce dogs.
