I'nesia: WHO Lab Confirms Fourth Human Death From Bird Flu

JAKARTA, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- The Indonesian Health Ministry here Tuesday confirmed the country's fourth human death from bird flu after receiving test reports from the World Health Organisation's laboratory in Hong Kong, the Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday.

The 23-year-old victim only identified as SW died in September, Hariadi Wibisono, a director at the ministry, told the news agency by phone.

"We got confirmation today that the test result was positive so the human death toll became four," he said.

"So far we have a total of seven cases of bird flu infections in humans," he added.

The highly pathogenic H5N1 strain has killed 64 people in four Asian countries since late 2003 and were found in birds in Russia and Europe.-- BERNAMA
