Indonesia's Bird Flu Death Toll Rises To 86

JAKARTA, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- The death toll because bird flu in Indonesia has risen to 86 after a man in Rawa Buaya, Cengkareng, west of Jakarta, succumbed to the killer disease on Sept 28.

According to Indonesia's Antara news agency, tests carried out on blood samples of the 21-year-old man by the Health Ministry's Research and Development Laboratory had shown that he was infected with the (H5N1) virus.

"With this latest result, the number of confirmed bird flu patients in Indonesia has reached 107 of whom 86 have died," the ministry’s spokeswoman, Lily S Sulistyowati, said today.

In Jakarta alone, the number of human bird flu cases has been recorded at 26, of which 23 were fatal. -- BERNAMA
