SPCA to reach out to PJ folk with a centre at Ikano

THE Selangor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), with the support of Pedigree Food for Dogs, will be opening its own centre at the Ikano Power Centre in Petaling Jaya on Sept 25.

The centre will not be an animal shelter, but a kiosk where efforts to educate the public on responsible pet ownership would be held every weekend.

To encourage the adoption of cats and dogs at its shelter in Ampang, SPCA is expected to bring some of the animals on weekends so that they could be viewed by prospective owners.

SPCA Selangor chairman Christine Chin said the new centre would significantly enhance SPCA’s outreach in the Petaling Jaya district.

“We have always wanted to reach out to the community in Petaling Jaya, and we are grateful to Pedigree for helping us set this place up,” she said.

”In addition to our regular activities, we will also be holding special activities at the new centre, ranging from educational sessions on grooming to pet shows and agility training demonstrations,” she added.

Established in 1958, the SPCA provides temporary shelter to unwanted animals in Selangor and the Federal Territory.

These include cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs and are usually pets no longer desired by their owners.

SPCA tries to find new homes for the more than 1,100 animals which arrive at its door every month (about 13,000 annually).

Marketing manager of Pedigree Wendy Lai said the setting up of the centre was part of an on-going collaboration between Pedigree, SPCA, the Malaysian Small Animal Veterinary Association (MSAVA) and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to promote Responsible Pet Ownership in Malaysia.

Members of the public are invited to the launch of the new SPCA Centre at Ikano Power Centre as a lot of fun activities and games will be organised.
