THE Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) received much needed support recently when HSBC Bank Malaysia Bhd presented it with RM100,000.

In a simple ceremony at the SPCA premises in Jalan Kerja Ayer Lama, Kuala Lumpur, the bank's deputy chairman and chief executive officer Zarir J. Cama presented the cheque to SPCA patron Tan Sri Dr Zaleha Mohd Ali.

An advocate for environmental conservation, Cama said HSBC would be working closely with SPCA through its Platinum Partner Programme to raise awareness on the problem of pet overpopulation, as well as promoting the Responsible Pet Ownership Programme.

“We have long been associated with conservation of turtles, marine life, wetlands and highlands, such as the recent project with WWF Malaysia to conserve Fraser's Hill,” he said.

“Today, we are proud to announce our sponsorship of RM100,000 as a Platinum Partner to SPCA.

“This commitment expresses our interest in protecting the lives of animals that have been abandoned or abused,” Cama said.

He added that through this initiative with SPCA, HSBC hoped that other companies would take an active stand on the welfare and protection of animals in Malaysia.

SPCA's animal inspector Sabrina Yeap said the SPCA Corporate Partnership programme was a fund-raising activity to get companies to do some charity work as well as raise awareness on animal welfare programmes.

She added that HSBC was the first bank to join the Corporate Partnership programme.
