Dog’s day out

WANT to take your dog out somewhere for a treat, but you are at your wits end wondering where?

Don’t blame yourself. Here, in this country, due to various sensitivities, there aren’t many places that are considered dog-friendly. It can be difficult finding a place secluded enough that you do not bother other people. Sometimes, I am content just to take my two mutts over to a friend’s place --- she has a huge garden and three dogs of her own --- so it is like a big, doggy party.

But all my dog-owning friends really look forward to events where they can bring their much-loved four-legged companions. It is a great way for them to meet other like-minded people, and a wonderful way to socialize their pets with other dogs.

One upcoming event I the Dog Day Morning, which will be held on September 24 from 9am and 1pm at Picture This & That, 183, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. The venues is beside the British High Commission.

You and your family can bring along your furry members for a picnic in the park.

Lots of activities have been lined up for you and your pet. But the best thing about this event is that it’s fun with a “purpose”.

The event is a fundraiser for SPCA and PAWS, two local animal shelters that care for, and re-home, mainly cats and dogs.

Both are charities that rely on public donations, so your support means a lot. It is because of your contribution that these animals are given the loving care they need, and efforts can be focused on seeing them have a second chance at happiness by being adopted.

“We want people to come together with their children and their faithful four-legged friends, enjoy a family outing and, at the same time, pitch in for a good cause”, said Christine Chin, chairperson of SPCA Selangor. “The activities will not only be entertaining but also educational so that pet owners can act responsibly and maintain a good community spirit”.

There will be many stall vendors providing a range of services and a host of things for you to buy (for yourself, and for your dog). You can sample from an exciting array of picnic food and drinks, and there will be all sorts of doggy treats and goodies to purchase.

An expert will provide tips on dog care and responsible pet ownership.

Think your pet has loads of unused energy he needs to vent? Then sign him up for games to wear him out and give him the exercise he needs!

There will also be activities for children such as face painting, body tattooing and sand art.

One of the highlights will be a guest appearance by Vanaja Dhanan, an animal lover who touched the hearts of many when she wrote about her pet dog, BenO. The book, entitled BenO Comes Home, will be on sale for RM15.

It is a charming tale about lonely pups being given a good home after having a pretty bad start in life. A story that will help teach kids the importance of compassion, kindness and love. And of the special friendship that only a dog can offer. Children can get their own autographed copy. The RM5 from each book sold will go towards SPCA and PAWS.

And after the storytelling, children, can design their own “BenO Comes Home” tees with some fun stamps. And you might just get to meet the star himself, BenO!

Also doing their bit for the cause is some young photographers who will be snapping “PAW-traits” of doggies and their owners.

Even if you don’t have a dog of your own, it does not matter. You are still welcome. This will be your chance to help these animal shelters, while having a great time watching --- and playing --- with other people’s dogs. You might even consider adopting a pet from the SPCA or PAWS after your Dog Day Morning!

Dog owners are reminded that all pets must be kept on leash and dog owners will be responsible for their pets at all times. If your dog makes a doggy mess, please pick up after him. Bring your own little poop-bags and dispose of the mess before someone else steps it it!

Don’t forget to bring your mats, sun tan lotions and insect repellant. And whatever else you think you may need for your picnic.
