Help support

MANY of you have heard of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). But what do they really do? And more importantly, what can you do to help them? The am of the SPCA is to protect defenseless animals and to alleviate their suffering. The SPCA Selangor provides temporary shelter to unwanted animals, mainly cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs. The animals that end up at the doorstep of the SPCA are more often than not pets that are no longer desired by their owners. More than 1,100 animals arrive each month, totaling to about 13,000 every year. Some are rehomed, but it is a huge challenge to do this considering the shortage of space and inadequate funds. Each year, the SPCA need about RM500,000 for its work. It is a charity, and does not receive any government assistance. All the money that SPCA receives for its operations comes from kind-hearted people who want to help animals that deserve a second chance at happiness. So, what can you do? Well, the SPCA has a wish list. Take a look at it, and you will probably be surprised that the items on the list are neither extravagant or luxuries. Just plain and simple needs for the animals in their care. SPCA Wish List: · Good homes for our animals |
· Dog and cat food · Antibacterial soap, garbage bags, latex gloves · Old bath/hand towels · Old newspapers · Donations in cash/kind · Sensible volunteers · Your support for our community messages/campaigns.
You can just
donate most of the items on the list without too much trouble or
inconvenience. What’s a few bags of dog food, right? And old
newspapers? The SPCA needs these to line the cages, and if you
donated those, you would be a great help! Adopting a pet is a big decision, and one that you should make after much thought. Do not rush into something because you feel sorry for the animals (believe me, I know --- look at Boomer’s face --- it tool a lot to stop myself form picking up the phone and booking him for myself). If you have the time, space and ability to care for an animal from the SPCA, go for it. Talk to the staff, and they will help you find the most suitable animal for you. Personal donations are always welcomed. And even better, why not |
start a campaign in your school through a club or society, and raise awareness as well as funds for the SPCA? You could invite someone form the SPCA to give talks in your school and that way, your schoolmates will learn more about the plight if stray, unwanted, abused and neglected animals, and what can be done to help them. Volunteering with the SPCA is also a mutually beneficial option. There is a long list of things you can volunteer to do. If you like the hands-on animal thing, you can help clean case, bathe puppies, walk the dogs, feed the cats, or just play with the animals and socialize with them, to ensure that they will be comfortable with people, making them ideal pet material. You will also gain much from the experience. Think about how you will feel if you are part of the reason an animal is successfully rehomed with a family, after being mistreated by his first? If you prefer to just help out from a distance, so to speak, you can help volunteer at fundraising events, or campaigns. Find out more from www.spca.org.my on what you can do as a volunteer.
