Dogs not to be blamed
The Star, 6 Sept 2005

With reference to the letter Two sides of a Story (Speaking Up, Aug 23), sad will be the day when man may have to live without dogs if the writer’s wishes were to come true.

It is a lamentable but true fact than many humans have been brought up without compassion for God’s creations, particularly when they are in the form of animals.

Yet I remain thankful that there are still many of us who love animals in all forms and sizes, not only dogs but all animals in general. Only we know the joy of having pets, the wholehearted love they give us and they are sometimes our very reason for living.

If dogs are dirty or smelly, do not blame them. Blame the owners who do not take care for them.

If they are noisy, what about little chldren? Aren’t they noisy too? Yet can we do without children? And why should dogs be scary?

If owners take good care of their pets and keep them within their compound or home, there is no way that they can attack a human.

As a veterinarian, I have dogs of all breeds which come to my clinic. If we try to understand animals and their psychology, they respond to us better.

So, please, do not blame dogs. They, as well as all animals, react according to their circumstances. They do not harbour vengeance.

Perhaps the writer is ignorant of dogs that have saved lives, dogs that are used in healing therapy in many hospitals in the developed world, dogs used by the blind and the disabled.

I have been keeping dogs all my life and I cannot imagine a world without dogs as man’s companion.
