Commercial Frog Farming

There are two species of frogs that can be reared on a commercial basis, namely the American Bull frog and Tiger frog. American Bull frogs have to be reared in cement pens  with low water level, that is maximum neck level, whereas Tiger frogs can be reared in pens made from earth banked up.  Water in pens should be at a higher level where the frogs can dive.

Rearing period

  • Eggs take 1 day to change into the tadpole stage

  • Tadpoles take 2 - 3 months to change into frogs, depending on feeds and management.

  • These frogs will then have to be reared for another 4 - 5 months before they can be marketed, that is, when they reach around 250gm live weight

  • Rearing period 8 months.

Floor space

  • Tadpole stage 1 day - 3 months:
    pen size 15' x 15' for 10,000 tadpoles

  • Frogs Day 1 - 30 days:
    pen size 15' x 15' for 3,000 heads

  • Frogs 30 days to marketing age:
    pen size 15' x 15' for 1,500 heads

  • Water level according to size of frogs, that is not higher than neck level.

Feeds

  • Cargill pellets or frog feeds imported from Taiwan can be given.

    Nutrient contents in frog pellets:

1.

Crude Protein

30-40%

2.

Crude Fat

Minimum 3%

3.

Crude Fiber

Maximum 6%

4.

  • Cargill pellets of a smaller size, that is, size 2 or size 1 for feeds imported from Taiwan, can be given while in the tadpole stage.  These feeds are given in the tadpole stage. Do not feed from day 1 - 7.  From day 8 - 30 feeds size 2 can also be given.

  • Feeds size 4 are given from day 30 - 75.

  • Feeds size 6 are given from day 75 - 105.

  • Feeds size 8 are given from day 105 - 150.
