Scientific name: Pyxicephalus edulis, P.adsperus. Origin: Africa. 2 spp.- one a dwarf. Also known as Pixie frog. Large - may weigh over 2kg. Unlike other frogs, females are much smaller in size. Olive-greenish colored bumpy skin. Male has yellow throat; female's cream. Only hind toes are webbed.

Scientific name: Occidozygo Lima. Otherwise known as Indonesian Floating frog. Spend large amount of time floating on water; hence their name. Light brownish stripe coming down centre of its back. Commonly bred domestically within US.

 

Asian Floating

         

Scientific name: Kaloula pulchra. Otherwise known as Asian Bullfrog, Chubby frog, Rice frog, Bubble frog.  Origin: South East Asia. Rich mahogany brown back with cream band down each side, usually with a darkish edge. Males have darker throats. Round shaped. Big eaters. Can be quite noisy.

Bullfrog

Scientific name: Rana catesbeiana. Very large. Largest. Can weigh up to 0.5kg. Color brownish to shades of green. Broad flat head and body. Dorsolateral ridge curves around tympanum. Males have bright yellow throats (females white)  and tympanum larger than eye. Ventral surfaces white and mottled with gray or yellow. Fully webbed hind feet. Egg masses in a foamy film - about 12,000-20,000 eggs. Tadpole stage 1-3 years. Like warm, shallow, still, highly vegetated waters. Have longer breeding season, higher rate of pre-metamorphic survivorship, allowing them to be more successful than other frogs. Lives 7-9 years. Voracious appetite.

         

Scientific name: Rana virgatipes. Brownish to olive-grey color with 4 light dorsal stripes running the length of their backs. No dorsolateral ridges.  Belly usually mottled with black. Jumpy and alert, but very hardy.

Scientific name: Rana areolata. Skin color varies from cream colored to dark brown, with dark brown spots encircled by white border. Very prominent dorsolateral ridges. Whitish belly.

Scientific name: Rana capito. Color dark ranging from grey to brown with black, reddish brown or dark brown spots. Distinctive sacral humps. Males may have yellow on its prominent dorsolateral ridges, warts, along upper jaw and in armpits and groin. Active at night. Explosive breeders. Tadpole stage 85-100 days.

Scientific name: Rana clamitans. Mini versions of bullfrogs. Very hardy. Ranging in color from tan to green, greenish brown, brownish, yellowish green and olive. Females have small irregular dark spots on the sides and back. Sometimes called bronze frogs. Legs have dark transverse bands; yellowish or white below. Males have bright yellow throat (females bright white) and tympanum larger than eye.. Dorsolateral folds curve around tympanum and extend 3/4 down the back.  1000-7000 eggs may be laid. Tadpole stage 3-22 months.

Sometimes called the meadow or grass frog. Excellent jumper. Color brown to green or combination. Long, pointed head. Dark brown round spots on dorsum between light dorsolateral ridges (which extend full length of body) and on sides of body. Spots outlined by lighter color. Distinct white spot on tympanum. Light line on upper jaw. White belly. Cluster of 3000-6000 eggs. Tadpole stage 70-110 days. 

         

 

Scientific name: Rana grylio. Color varies from olive to dark brownish green, to bright green to yellow. Large with narrow, pointed head. Prominent tympanum (larger than eye on males) and dark brown dorsal spots. Ventral surfaces white or pale yellow with gray mottling on thighs. No dorsolateral folds. Eyes noticeably elevated above head and fairly close together. Hind feet fully webbed. 10,000 eggs/hatch on surface of water. Egg mass usually resembles a floating froth of bubbles. Tadpole stage 1 year.

Scientific name: Rana berlandieri. Pale brown or green color with several rows of irregularly placed dark spots between light dorsolateral folds. Spots are outlined by lighter color. Pale light line along upper jaw.
