American Landrace |
Origin: Denmark. Cross between Large White hog from England with
native swine. Color - white. Long body with 16-17 pairs of ribs;
almost flat back. Long, rather narrow head; large, heavy ears
carried close to face. Admirable meatiness on foot, particularly on
rail. Sows are prolific mothers and noted for milk producing
abilities. Reach top milk production after 5 weeks of lactation. |

Bazna |
Origin:
central Transylvania region, Romania. Cross between Berkshire and
Mangalitsa, and improved by using Wessex and Hampshire breeds..
Color black with white belt which surrounds the trunk at the
shoulders, including the forelimbs. Width of belt reaches 30-40cm.
In some, the hind limbs, snout and tip of tail are also white as in
the Berk breed. Hair quite dense, smooth, slightly curly with
average length of 4cm. Adult sows weigh 160-180kg and boars
180-220kg. Daily weight gain during fattening period is 550-600g
with food conversion of 5.5kg. Young pigs are fit for early
fattening, weighing 90-110kg at slaughtering. Best at 140-160kg when
the lean/fat ratio is 1.3-1.4. Good prolificacy with average of 9.5
piglets per farrowing, weaning approximately 8. Longevity 8-12
farrowings. |

Origin: northern Germany. Also known as Buntes Bentheimer Schwein.
Local breed crossed with Berkshire and Cornwalls. White with black
spots in grey rings. Medium sized; boar 250kg, sow 180kg. Hardy and
long-lived. High fertility (9.2 piglets/litter). Rare breed. Nearly

Origin: Slovenia. Otherwise known as Blackbelted pig. Back part of

for producing fat as well as meat of excellent quality. |

Kunekune |
Smaller than other breeds. Short legs, short & round bodies. Short,
turned-up snout. The most obvious and distinctive feature is tassels
about 4cm long hanging from their lower jaw. Color range includes
black, black and white, white, gold, tan and brown. Boars become
fertile at 6-7 months; gilts as early as 5 months but recommended
not to be mated until at least 1 year old. Excellent ratio of meat

Origin: Austria-Hungary. Also known as Wollschwein (German),
Mangulica, Mangulac, Mangalita, Mangaliza, Mangalica, Hungarian
Curly Coat, Porc laineux des Pacages, Wollhaariges. Several color
varieties - yellowish-white (chief), black or swallow-bellied, red
and Kula. Much favoured as bacon and lard producer. Suited for
extensive pork production. Excellent for sausages. Robust and
resistant to diseases and stress. |

Origin: Taihu Lake, China. Slow growing. Sows grow to 61.6kg in
live-weight. Dressing percentage 66.8%. Very good taste. Resistant
to some diseases. One of the most prolific breeds of pigs. Reach

large litter size of 15-16 pigs. 2 litters per year quite common.

Basically 2 classes; one short, fat with a short snout; the other

Origin: Ravenna province, Italy. Very dark brown coloring with a
coppery hue. Sows have a thicker ridge of longer bristles along back
and dark grey skin with rosy color underside.Typical long body. Head

long, tapering snout. Average mature weight of 250-300kg. Not very
prolific (5-6 piglets) and have poor supply of milk for litters. |
