American Landrace

Origin: Denmark. Cross between Large White hog from England with native swine. Color - white. Long body with 16-17 pairs of ribs; almost flat back. Long, rather narrow head; large, heavy ears carried close to face. Admirable meatiness on foot, particularly on rail. Sows are prolific mothers and noted for milk producing abilities. Reach top milk production after 5 weeks of lactation.

 

 

Origin: England. Meat hog. Grow at over 3 lbs/day with feed conversions at 1.94. Mothering ability, larger litters.

Yorkshire

 

 


Angeln Saddleback

Origin: Angeln, northern Germany. Cross between black and white Landrace with Wessex-Saddleback. White belt on black body. Big-sized. Boar 350kg, sow 300kg. Too fat for consumers. High fertility. Good mothers with much milk. Rare breed. Nearly extinct.

 

 


Arapawa Island

Origin: Arapawa island, New Zealand. Similar to Oxford Sandy and Black, Berkshires and Tamworths.

 

 


Ba Xuyen

Origin: Mekong River delta, south Vietnam. Composite of Berkshire and Bo Xu. Short body, with roughly similar proportion of black and white areas; medium sized ears and small legs. Weighs 100kg by 12 months of age. Average number of piglets born alive per litter is 8.

 

 


Bazna

Origin: central Transylvania region, Romania. Cross between Berkshire and Mangalitsa, and improved by using Wessex and Hampshire breeds.. Color black with white belt which surrounds the trunk at the shoulders, including the forelimbs. Width of belt reaches 30-40cm. In some, the hind limbs, snout and tip of tail are also white as in the Berk breed. Hair quite dense, smooth, slightly curly with average length of 4cm. Adult sows weigh 160-180kg and boars 180-220kg. Daily weight gain during fattening period is 550-600g with food conversion of 5.5kg. Young pigs are fit for early fattening, weighing 90-110kg at slaughtering. Best at 140-160kg when the lean/fat ratio is 1.3-1.4. Good prolificacy with average of 9.5 piglets per farrowing, weaning approximately 8. Longevity 8-12 farrowings.

 

 


Bentheim Black Pied

Origin: northern Germany. Also known as Buntes Bentheimer Schwein. Local breed crossed with Berkshire and Cornwalls. White with black spots in grey rings. Medium sized; boar 250kg, sow 180kg. Hardy and long-lived. High fertility (9.2 piglets/litter). Rare breed. Nearly extinct.

 

 


Berkshire

Origin: Reading, England. Fast & efficient growth; meatiness. Excellent carcass quality. Produce hams and bacon of rare quality and flavor. Reproductive efficiency.

 

 


Black Slavonian

Also known as Crna slavonska, Schwarzes slovonisches, Faiferica, Pfeifer. Meat breed. Berkshire and Poland China cross with Black Mangalitsa.

 

 


Chester White

Origin: Chester County, Pennsylvania. Formerly known as Chester County White.

 

 


Duroc

Origin: Eastern United States. Originally called Duroc-Jersey. Color range from a very light golden, almost yellow color, to a very dark red that approaches mahogany.

 

 


Fengjing

Origin: Taihu Lake, China. Among some of the most prolific breeds of pigs in the world. High embryo survival rates and large litter sizes. Two litters per year common. Reach puberty at 2 1/2-3 months of age. Sows 69.6kg live weight. 

 

 


Gloucestire Old Spots

Origin: Berkeley Valley, England. At one time, called the Orchard Pig because partially raised on windfall apples and whey. Black & white breed, predominantly white. Heavy drooped ear. Sows are known for large litters and high milk production.

   


Hampshire

One of the oldest early American breeds. Had various other names including Thin Rind, McKay, McGee, Saddleback and Ring Middle.  Black with white belt. Noted for their large size. Admired for their prolificacy, hardy vigor and outstanding carcass qualities.

   


Hezuo

Origin: Plateau region, China. Characterized by long, coarse and dense bristles. Slow growth rate and low prolificacy with litter size of 4-7. Five pairs of teats.

   


Jinhua

Origin: China. White body, black at head and rump leading to common name of "two-end-black". Especially noted for its thin skin, fine bones and tender meat with high reputation in international market. Early maturing; may be mated as early as 3-4 months old. Fairly prolific with an average litter size of 13. Seven pairs of teats.

   


Kele

Arched back & loin; long straight snout. Noted for their thick back fat (5.1-7.2cm) and more visceral fat (15.6% of carcass weight). Relatively low in prolificacy with litter size of 7-8 and 5-6 pairs of teats.

   


Krskopolje

Origin: Slovenia. Otherwise known as Blackbelted pig. Back part of the body usually black, while front part more or less white --- in the form of a wide white stripe of belt around the body. Flat head with big hanging ears. Average fertility, good appetite, growth ability and large adult weight (250-300kg). Distinguished ability for producing fat as well as meat of excellent quality.

   


Kunekune

Smaller than other breeds. Short legs, short & round bodies. Short, turned-up snout. The most obvious and distinctive feature is tassels about 4cm long hanging from their lower jaw. Color range includes black, black and white, white, gold, tan and brown. Boars become fertile at 6-7 months; gilts as early as 5 months but recommended not to be mated until at least 1 year old. Excellent ratio of meat to fat.

   


Large Black-White

Origin: China. Hair coat of black and white patches. Slightly concave back and pendulous, drooping belly. Precocious breed; first mating at 3-4 months old. Prolific with 13 pigs per litter. 7 pairs of teats.

   


Lithuanian Native

Origin: Lithuania. Also known as Vietines kiaules. Diverse in color: white, black, tan, but mostly multicolored. Adult boars - 260kg, sows 180kg. Fattening pigs gain 600g daily. Carcass length 92.5cm. Average litter size 11.4 pigs.

   


Mangalitsa

Origin: Austria-Hungary. Also known as Wollschwein (German), Mangulica, Mangulac, Mangalita, Mangaliza, Mangalica, Hungarian Curly Coat, Porc laineux des Pacages, Wollhaariges. Several color varieties - yellowish-white (chief), black or swallow-bellied, red and Kula. Much favoured as bacon and lard producer. Suited for extensive pork production. Excellent for sausages. Robust and resistant to diseases and stress.

   


Meishan

Origin: Taihu Lake, China. Slow growing. Sows grow to 61.6kg in live-weight. Dressing percentage 66.8%. Very good taste. Resistant to some diseases. One of the most prolific breeds of pigs. Reach puberty at 2 1/2-3 months of age; high embryo survival rates and large litter size of 15-16 pigs. 2 litters per year quite common.

   


Middle White

Origin: Yorkshire. Meaty. Sows rear an average of 8.15 pigs per litter.

   


Minzhu

Origin: Northern China. Also known as Ming, Min or Da Min. Also slow growing. Relatively large body size. Sows grow to 88.3kg live weight. Dressing percentage 72.2%. Very good taste. Resistant to diseases. Can be identified by its very long black hair. Prolific breed. Reach puberty at 3-4 months of age; high embryo survival rates and a large litter rate of 15-16 pigs.

   


Mong Cai

Origin: Vietnam. Small to medium body size. Black head with small and upright ears. Black patches elsewhere on body with white band running from one side of abdomen over shoulder to other side of abdomen. High prolificacy, good adaptation to poor quality feed and diseases resistance. Average litter size of 12.

   


Mukota

Basically 2 classes; one short, fat with a short snout; the other long-nosed with razor back. Black color. Known to be hardy and well adapted to harsh tropical environment in terms of heat stress, high disease resistance and inadequate nutrition. Water consumption also very low. 6 litres per litter is adequate weekly. Age at first litter ranges from 6-12 months. Average litter size 6.5-7.5

   


Mora Romagnola

Origin: Ravenna province, Italy. Very dark brown coloring with a coppery hue. Sows have a thicker ridge of longer bristles along back and dark grey skin with rosy color underside.Typical long body. Head is long with straight profile and forward-growing ears covering a long, tapering snout. Average mature weight of 250-300kg. Not very prolific (5-6 piglets) and have poor supply of milk for litters.

   


Moura

Origin: Brazil. Rare breed. Also known as Estrela, Estrelense, Mouro and Pereira.  Usually blue roan in coloration, occasionally red roan.

   


Neijang

Comparatively large in size. Thick skin. Precocious. Young boar may start mating as early an age as 2 months; gilts at 3 months. Average litter size 10.6. 7 pairs of teats.

   


Ningxiang

Origin: Hunan province, China. Also known as Ninsya or Ninsyan (Russian), Ning-Chang (German). Coat color pattern "black clouds overhanging snows with silver ring around neck". Slightly concave back, belly pouched and pendulous. Average litter size 11.5. 7 pairs of teats.

   


Ossabaw Island Hog

Origin: Ossabaw Island, Georgia. Colors include black, spotted black and white, red and tan. Small. Prick ears, heavy coats and long snouts.

   


Philippine Native

Either black or black with white belly. Varieties include Ilocos and Jalajala. Low feed conversion ratio. Very prolific. Thought to be extinct now.

   


Pietrain

Origin: Pietrain, Belgium. Medium size. White with black spots around which are characteristic rings of light pigmentation that carries white hair. Commonly referred to as being of piebald markings. Ears carried erect. Shorter legs than most breeds, stockier in build and quite broad along the back. Extremely high proportion of lean to fat. A desired breed for fresh meat processing. Prolific but lack in milk production.

   


Poland China

Unbeatable among various breeds for characteristic maximum weight at any given age. Excellent feeders and gain readily. Also known for having very substantial bone.

   


Vietnamese Potbelly

Origin: Vietnam. Also known as Pot Belly. Dwarf breed. Full grown at about 5 years of age, they weigh an average of 70-150lb. with some reaching 200lbs or more, 3' long and 15" tall. Colors range from solid black to solid white, with variety of spots in between.

   


Red Wattle

Origin: New Caledonia. Also known as Red Waddle. Lean meat type. Flavor excellent. Looks something like a Duroc or Tamworth/Duroc cross, but with a pair of wattles hanging from neck.

   


Swabian-Hall

Origin: Schwabisch Hall, Germany. Large. White with black head and backpart. End of tail and snout also white. Between the black and white is a grey zone. Boar - 350kg; sow - 280kg. Hardy, long-lived. High fertility (9.2 piglets/litter) and good mother with abundant mlik.

   


Tamworth

Origin: Ireland where they are called The Irish Grazer. Distinctly bacon type. Reputation of producing the best bacon. Long body. Long head, snout moderately long and quite straight. Ears carried erect. Red coat. May vary from golden red to dark red.  Extremely high quality breed and most active. Sows excellent mothers too.

   


Thuoc Nhieu

Origin: Vietnam. White with piebald bristles. Average prolificacy at 8-10 piglets per litter. Well known for good mothering ability. Can reach 100kg live weight at 10 months of age.

   


Tibetan

Light body weight (35kg). Narrow head and long, straight snout. Black hair coat, with long and dense bristles. Low prolificacy, with a litter size of 5. 5 pairs of teats.

   


Turopolje

Off-white curly hair, Black patches on either side of body; skin without pigment. Long body. Well-developed udders with 10-12 teats. Five piglets per brood. High level of resistance to disease.
