Tennessee Red

 

Scientific name: Colinus virginianus. 4 primary species - Northern, Black-throated, Spot-bellied & CrestedOver 20 sub-species. Reddish brown with short grey tail. Mature in 16 weeks. Dress 7-9 oz. Prolific layers. Start laying by 24 weeks. Delicious.

 

Muted BobWhites. Very aggressive. Red in colour with black dots. Other mutations are Mexican Speckled, White & Silver Bobwhites.

Scientific name: Coturnix chinensis. Button quail also known as Chinese Painted quail & King quail (in Australia). 2 subspecies of Painted quail - Chinese Painted (Coturnix chinensis chinensis) & African Blue (Coturnix chinensis adansonii). Colours - blueface & golden pearl, silver & white, cinnamon, fawn, red breasted, slate, smokey. Can lay an egg nearly every day of the year.

 
         

Japanese

Scientific name: Coturnix japonica. Domesticated species. Bred for commercial production. Other names - common quail (Coturnix coturnix), Coturnix, Eastern quail, Asiatic quail, Stubble quail, Red-throat quail, European quail (Coturnix coturnix coturnix) , Nile & Mediterranean quail, in America - Pharoah or Eurasian quail (Coturnix communis ), German quail, in Japan - Japanese quail . Colour russet brown. Females have spots over breasts. Rest of body mottled pattern with paler underside. Young are yellowish with stripes of brown. Weigh 3 1/2-5 1/2oz. Varieties - Manchurian Golden (gold & cream), Range (dark brown), Fawn (pinkish brown pencilled with white), Tuxedo (black with white breast), English Black (Black), Barred ( brown with black barring) &  English White. Dark eyes with white strips above each eye. Average 16-18cm length. Bodies round. Quite short tails.
