Barbados Blackbelly |
Origin: Africa. Cross of African hair sheep & European wooled
breeds.
Hair sheep (complete covering of medium to thick hair- no wool). All
shades of brown, tan or yellow with contrasting black under parts
extending up neck & down inside of legs, plank & back of thighs.
Inside hair of ears is black, as is chin & poll. Adapt to widespread
environments. Resistant to effects of internal parasites.
Rams have a neckpiece of long hair (up to 6"), which extends down
neck to brisket & extends over sides & top of neck & shoulders as
showy blanket in some. Polled. Body weights of ewes 80-100 lbs &
rams 105-125 lbs.
High reproductive efficiency - average of 1.5-2.3 lambs/litter.
Average lambing interval 8-9 months. Fully fertile in crosses with
other breeds especially with Dorset Horn & Suffolk resulted in
pronounced increase in growth rate of progeny. |

Border Leicester |
Origin: Leicestershire, England
Roman nose & erect ears. Rams weigh from 102-147 kg & ewes from 79-124 kg.
Long, lustrous wool. Fleece weight ranges from 8-12 lbs with a yield
of 65-80 %. Stable length of fleece ranges from 5-10". |

Polled Dorset |
Origin: North Carolina State College, Raleigh, NC.
Number 1 white faced breed in US. White sheep of medium size; have
good muscle conformation to produce desirable carcass. Ewes weigh
from 150-200 lbs; rams 225-275 lbs. Good mothers - multiple births
common; good milkers.
Fleece is very white, strong, close & free from dark fibre;
average 2.25-4 kg with yield of between 50-70 %. Staple length
ranges from 2.5-4". |

Poll Merino |
Origin: Australia
Relatively new breed. Purely without horns. Easier to handle at
shearing & crutching time. Generally large framed, plain bodied;
mature quickly. Highly fertile. |

Romney |
Origin: Kent, England.
Predominant breed in New Zealand. Dual purpose. Efficiently convert
pasture into lean, high quality carcasses. Meat known for its
delicate taste. Males weigh from 102-124 kg, ewes 68-90 kg. Hooves
resistant to foot rot.
Fleece unique among all breeds. Long, lustrous, hangs in separate
locks, with minimal cross fibers between. Remain healthy even in
harsh weather. High yielding - range from 65-80 % and weigh from
3.6-5.4 kg; low grease content (light shrinking upon washing),
readily takes dye & easily spun. Finest fiber diameter of all long
wool breeds. |

Suffolk |
Origin: Suffolk, England. Crossbred between Southdown &
Norfolk Horned.
Known for its meatiness - Ram weigh from 113-159 kg; ewes from
81-113 kg & wool quality - fleece weights between 2.25-3.6 kg with a
yield of 50-62 %. Fleeces considered medium with staple length
ranging from 2-3.5". |
