DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY SERVICES, (DVS) PERAK
HISTORY

If we were to write a full history on veterinary service in Perak, it's certainly going to require a detailed and profound study. We should also note down precise facts pertaining to livestock industry and its development. Anyway, we would like to note briefly how it started and introduce those who have lead veterinary services in Perak as far as what can be obtained from past records.

Veterinary service in the State date back to the year 1895, according to what was noted down       by    Perak        British   Resident at that time,   although

on a  small scale. According to these reports, veterinary service branch gave good service in their effort to treat animals like horses, cattle, buffaloes and pigs. At that time veterinary service was just a small branch in medical department and veterinary officers were appointed to this department. In 1896, those in the veterinary branch were conscripted in the control of a violent swine fever epidemic occurring in the State at that time.

The veterinary branch also were overwhelmed in the control     and      prevention    of

diseases  rampant among livestock like cattle, buffaloes and others at that time.

It cannot be ascertained as to who is the veterinary officer from 1895 to 1897; can only trace that Mr G.Moir, MRCVS, was appointed to Perak government in October 1898.

Records showed that Mr G.Moir was given a salary in the region of $200 a month and served Perak for 29 years. He left the State to assist in other States for 7 years and also fought in the war from 1914 to 1918.   Mr P.G.Short  joined  the  service in

1905 - 1932. He served for 29½ years including a few months in Negeri Sembilan and the Straits before retiring in 1932. Both officers were closely related with the history of veterinary service in Perak.
